Myles, William (Bill) – Coauthor of Myles Traveled: Stories of My American Journey

William (Bill) Myles was born in Kansas City, Missouri on November 21, 1936. He has lived a fascinating life in athletics, from segregated Kansas City and Negro Leagues Baseball to an up and coming high school coach, and then an insider in the country’s most powerful college football programs. Bill coached with the giants at the University of Nebraska and Ohio State — Bob Devaney, Tom Osborne, Woody Hayes, and Earle Bruce. With a career record of 170 wins, 67 loses, 7 ties, and 8 Big Eight/Big Ten championships, Bill coached in 14 college bowl games, including the Rose, Sugar, Cotton, Orange, Fiesta, and Gator Bowls. Bill then served 22 years as Associate AD at Ohio State.

Along his journey, Bill noticed everything. Consequently, this former history teacher became the “go-to” expert for athletic history, black history, and sports trivia. Bill’s compassion for others and common-sense approach to football have endeared him in the hearts of his players and colleagues. Bill’s wisdom and lifetime experiences make him the consummate funny and meaningful storyteller. With a bachelor’s degree from Drake University and a master’s degree from Central Missouri State, along with a booming voice with distinct enunciation, Myles is a sought-after public speaker and recipient of a long list of awards and honors.

Bill and his high school sweetheart, Lorita Jane Thompson, are celebrating 57 years of marriage. They are the proud parents of two children and two grandchildren. Although Bill is retired from coaching, he still works out each morning in the Woody Hayes Athletic Facility. He resides with his family in Worthington, Ohio.
